What is Planning in the Cloud?

The latest addition to Oracle’s cloud portfolio is Oracle Planning and Budgeting Cloud Service (PBCS). This Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model allows users to essentially rent software over time instead of purchasing it outright.

Why has Oracle released a Cloud Planning offering?Competition is a key driver, as is Oracle’s strategy to attack underserved markets.  Perhaps the main driver is that 35% of large companies and as much as 65% of mid-size companies are still using spreadsheets or legacy applications to meet their core management processes - such as planning and forecasting (Gartner).  There is an opportunity to attack this problem with an easier to use service that lowers the total cost of ownership, without a compromise in capability.

How does the Oracle Cloud Planning offering help? Businesses implementing an in-house enterprise approach for planning, budgeting, and forecasting face the difficulty of building a business case for potentially large up front costs for licensing, implementations, hardware, ongoing maintenance, etc.

This is where the SaaS model is a perfect solution for those needing to make the transition away from spreadsheets to best practice planning.  Removing the up front and on-going maintenance costs, reducing Total Cost of Ownership by 30-40%, business are now able to take advantage of a world class planning application that is proven, with a substantially lower total investment, without a compromise.

The other major benefit of PBCS is rapid deployment. It is intended to be up and running quickly with no IT investment or support costs. What makes this possible is in part the cloud, the other part is an effective library of Planning Cloud Apps to reduce time and effort, and ensure your business is quickly realising return.

What’s included? The Hyperion Planning software that you would expect is available on the cloud –the Workspace portal, Planning, Shared Services, Financial Reporting, Smart View Provider, and Essbase.

You can find out more here.

What are the capabilities? The Planning in the Cloud offering is pretty much the same as the licensed version you can install.  There are however a few caveats:

  • You get one Planning application only.  Additional Planning applications require additional subscriptions.
  • No other Planning modules such as CAPEX, Workforce, Project Financial Planning, Public Sector Planning and Budgeting etc.,)
  • Up to four plan types (ASO or BSO)
  • No EPMA; Classic only
  • No corporate directory authentication
  • Essbase Administration Services is not available in Oracle’s cloud.
  • All data needs to be uploaded via flat files either manually though the web or automated using a DOS file transfer utility.
This is when Qubix comes in to play. Our range of customised Cloud Apps enables Planning and budgeting Cloud Service to really work for you.

Our packages are specifically designed so you can quickly and easily pick the right level for you (view here).

Speak to one of our Customer Success Managers to figure out which solution is correct for you.

What about on-going Support & Maintenance? The service is hosted and managed by Oracle using their own “Exa…”platforms, which is a clear benefit for subscribers. Oracle provides the following as part of the subscription to the service:

  • Built-in automatic scaling as you add users and increase usage
  • Built-in fault tolerance and redundancy
  • Patches are automatically provided and supported by Qubix to ensure that you are always fully up to date.
  • Essbase data is backed up once per day.
  • There are built-in application diagnostics that assist you with your application design and it’s performance.
  • Essbase administration is in now inside the Calculation Manager.
What about Training? The service includes some built-in tutorials, but Qubix supports our clients by offering full training around Planning the in the Cloud.  As well as a full range of other free courses. You can view these here.

When is Planning in the Cloud not a good option? For a majority of organisations, large and small, Planning in the Cloud is no-brainer option.  However, may want to rethink the cloud if using:

  • Multiple planning applications or EPMA
  • Other Hyperion products that are not on the cloud yet - although this depends on the level of integration required
  • Any of the Planning modules
  • If you’ve already bought Oracle licenses and have the IT infrastructure in place
